Study Abroad Trip to Japan 2025

During the past few years, students at the Utah School for the Deaf have studied and visited Thailand, Italy, Peru, Germany, India, and Egypt! Join us for the next stop… Japan.

Junior and senior deaf and hard-of-hearing students throughout Utah have an amazing opportunity to take a 11-day educational international trip to Japan from April 2 – 12, 2025.
This trip is primarily supported by USDB Enrichment Funds and monitored by the Administration and Advisory Council of USDB. However, we do expect that each student will pay a $500 deposit to attend this trip subject to the USDB Student Fees Policy. This amount will be due by December 1, 2024.
We want to ensure that students will be respectful and use this as an educational teaching tool. Below is the list of requirements that need to be achieved in order for a student to attend.
Requirements to Attend Educational Trip to Japan, April 2 – 12, 2025:
___ Submit an application to participate by September 13, 2024.
___ Obtain a passport no later than December 1, 2024 (paid for by the student)
___ Obtain the required immunizations for out-of-country travel to Japan, including a COVID-19 vaccine if needed,
(paid for by the student)
___ Physically and healthy enough to travel long distances and complete the activities as outlined
___ Pay a $500 deposit to USDB by December 1, 2024, subject to the USDB Student Fee Policy.
___ ‘C’ grade average or better for all classes each quarter. No ‘F’s in any class
___ Regular attendance at school with no unexcused absences
___ Good behavior on transportation.
___ Study and demonstrate basic Japanese Sign Language.
___ Study and demonstrate a basic understanding of Japan’s cultural norms.
___ Study and demonstrate an understanding of the geography of Japan.
___ Study and demonstrate an understanding of the government and political issues of Japan.
___ Signed paperwork from parents giving permission to attend the activity and signed an agreement that the student will adhere to the highest behavior expectations.
___ Write a research paper and present it about Japan with classmates and the USDB Advisory Council.

Trip Itinerary – Japan 2025
DAY 1 • • • Depart from your home or preferred airport for an overnight flight to Tokyo.
DAY 2 • • • Arrival in Tokyo. Stay in Tokyo for 3 nights.
DAY 3 • • • Explore Asakusa and Tokyo’s largest temple, Senso-ji, and learn about the difference between
Buddhism and Shintoism. Go up Tokyo Metropolitan Building for a commanding view of the
metropolis. Dinner at Fusao, a Deaf-owned restaurant.
DAY 4 • • • Visit the historic Tsukiji Fish Market in the morning and try to eat some unique foods! In the
afternoon, amble the Shibuya and Harajuku districts where the trendy fads among Japan’s young
people are showcased.
DAY 5 • • • Bullet train to Hiroshima. Place your bags in the hotel, and go straight to the Hiroshima Peace
Memorial Museum and learn about the devastation caused by the A-bomb. Stay in Hiroshima for 2
nights.
DAY 6 • • • Take a ferry and spend all day in Miyajima, a sacred island. Marvel at the floating torii at sunset.
DAY 7 • • • Bullet train to Kyoto. Place your bags in the hotel, and go straight to Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion.
Stay in Kyoto for 2 nights.
DAY 8 • • • All day in Higashiyama, the historic area with cobblestoned streets. Visit a stunning temple on a
ledge, Kiyomizu-dera. Try on the traditional Japanese clothing, kimono! Bullet train to Tokyo in the
evening.
DAY 9 • • • Day trip to Nara to see the Great Buddha and the world’s largest wooden structure, Todaiji. Bow to
the free-roaming deer in the area, considered sacred to Shinto. See the thousand red torii in Fushimi.
After returning to Kyoto, pick up the baggage. Bullet train to Tokyo in the evening. Stay in Tokyo for
2 nights.
DAY 10 • • • Surprise visit to a location near Tokyo.
DAY 11 • • •Bullet train to Tokyo and take the departure flight back to your home.
